I am dedicating this post to my amazing, dog personality like, “hearing” cat, Mufasa. Today is Valentine’s Day and he turns 5 years old.
We all have heard of Seeing Eye Dogs for the blind and perhaps some have heard about the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf…but what about a Hearing Cat for the Deaf?
YUP.
It is totally not crazy! My cat is one of them!!
It is pretty incredible if you ask me. I didn’t realize this until we moved up to Nor Cal that Mufasa would let me know when my phone rang or I got a text message. He would do this by laying down near my phone where ever I had it laying. Infact…I bet he was doing it all along but I wasn’t paying attention to him in that way.
Since we moved out of our studio loft apartment and into our 1 1/2 bedroom duplex, he hasn’t done it that much with the phone/text (I think because we are in a different rooms more often now than when we were in the studio). I thought to myself….”Well THAT didn’t last long”.
When I was pregnant with my son, I started searching for a puppy to get and train to be my ears. I was so nervous that I wouldn’t hear my baby cry and I wanted a dog to notify me if Daniel wasn’t home. I really wanted this to happen before the baby came. But we decided not to get a puppy just yet because I couldn’t imagine the thought of training when I was so pregnant and exhausted all the time.
When baby Dash first came into the world, I would sleep with my hearing aids on when Daniel left early in the morning for work because I was so afraid I would not hear him cry. And guess what? I stopped doing that because I realized that Mufasa was letting me know every single time my son would cry! My baby would be in the bassinet near our bed and when he would wake up crying, Mufasa would jump on me and come right to my face and stare and walk on me until I woke up.
IT WAS AWESOME.
If I am in the living room, Mufasa would come out to tell me that my son had woken up from his nap.
I WAS AMAZED!
I love how God picked this cat to be in our lives. Who needs a Hearing Dog when you’ve got a Hearing Cat?!?!
Where Did you Get This Cat?!?!
5 years ago my husband and I lived in a town-home in OC. We were having horrible rat issues inside our home (my poor mom could tell you her wonderful traumatizing visit with a half dead rat!)
Anyhow, I got so disgusted seeing rat droppings and pee on our furniture that it would just bring me to tears every time I found something and it was becoming a daily thing. The traps weren’t even helping! So my hubby brought up an idea of “What if we got a cat/kitten??” As much as I love animals…I knew it would be a lot of work but agreed it was a good idea but it HAD to be a girl and Black!
I don’t remember how long it took us to find our kitten but we did! There was an adoption going on with 3 kittens, 2 female and 1 male at our local pet store. We arrived early and watched them set up the booth and looked at the 3 all black cute kittens. People were arriving to see them as well (we turned in our adoption application before most of them so we had 2nd pick)
I got to hold one of the female sister kittens and she as so soft and precious! But if you know anything about adopting animals into your family, you know that you want THEM to chose YOU. It’s all apart of the bonding experience! I definitely wasn’t feeling that special bond with the female kittens.
As we were waiting for our turn to hold them again, the worker gal asked if I’d like to hold the male. I said “Sure, why not?” As soon as the male kitten was placed into my arms, he immediately started purring…..like I’m talking REALLY LOUD. He was trying to cuddle with me as close as he could! Oh it was so so so so precious and sweet. It was a bonding moment no one could mistake! Even the workers were making comments about it.
After others convinced me that not all male cats sprayed (that was my major concern for getting a male cat), I then agreed that we would take him home.
HOORAY!!!!
How Did You Come Up With His Name?
There was a little girl who was adopting one of the female kittens and she shared with us that she names all her animal after Disney Characters. After hearing that, Daniel looked at me and said “How about Mufasa?” I replied with “Sure! Who’s that?” And he then proceeded to tell me about “The Lion King”, which I had never seen before. Don’t worry, I have seen it a million times now!
What Kind Of Cat Is He?
My mom and sister were watching a show called something “101 Cats” and it was talking about a cat called a “Bombay”. They were bred to be mini panthers, they loved cuddling, had a dog like personality, and they were all black. I remember my mom telling me something like “We saw Mufasa on TV! We believe we know what kind of cat he is!”
I’ve had many cats growing up and none had a personality like Mufasa. Mufasa follows me EVERYWHERE and when he was a baby he even fetched a few times and he greets people at the door. He even gives kisses/licks! He loves people food and he loves to play hide and seek. So….we decided that he was a Bombay, at least a mix.
When you’ve tot a cat who is totally okey with your 1 year old pulling its tail and wants to give hugs and kisses……you know you’ve tot a GREAT cat and deserves to be bragged about 🙂
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUFASA!
♥Much love to everyone and hope you all are enjoying a Happy Valentine’s Day!♥
